Digg It!
He's running as a conservative in a party that touts "the sanctity of marriage"
as one of their top issues. Therefore his having divorced his first wife because
she was involved in a bad accident, and his having married his second wife, 17
years his junior, shortly thereafter, is relevant. John McCain likes to talk
about he was a POW. He doesn't like to talk as much about how he ditched his
wife a few years after returning home. If we're being asked to consider 8 more
years of these people, and their morality, then it's time we inquired about
their morality. McCain would like us to remember the hero part, then forget the
trophy bride part, even though they both happened around the same time. You get
one, you get the other. And he was 42 years old at the time, so let's stop
excusing Republicans for their "youthful indiscretions" that happened about the
time of menopause. The Bible doesn't have a statute of limitations. If we have
to live by it, they have to live by it.
From the NYT eight years ago:
Mr. McCain has acknowledged running around with women and accepted
responsibility for the breakup of the marriage, without going into details.
But his supporters and his biographer, Robert Timberg, all suggest that the

the time he met Cindy, his present wife.
That might be the most soothing way of explaining a politician's divorce
from a disabled wife and his remarriage to a wealthy heiress, but it does
not jibe with accounts of family members and friends.
Lots more after the jump...
John and Carol McCain had separated once briefly after they moved to

Avenue. That was the first hint that Joe McCain, John's younger brother, had
of any marital problems, for neither John nor Carol confided much about
personal problems....
''For somebody to say that they were separated or at each other's throats is
just nonsense,'' Mr. Smith said.
Yet at precisely the time that Mr. Smith was a guest in what appeared to be
a happy household, in April 1979, Mr. McCain accompanied a group of senators
on a trip to China. The Navy threw a big cocktail party for the group during
a stopover in Honolulu.
''John and I were talking, and then somebody tapped me on the shoulder and I
turned around and exchanged a few words,'' said Albert A. Lakeland, then a
Senate staff member. ''When I turned around, John was gone. I looked around,
and he was making a beeline for this very attractive blond woman.
''He spent the whole party talking to her, and he kept avoiding me when I

Over the next six months, Mr. McCain pursued Miss Hensley aggressively,
flying around the country to see her, and he began to push to end his

Late that year, the McCains finally separated, and Mrs. McCain accepted a
divorce the next February. Mr. McCain promptly married Miss Hensley, his
present wife.

Big-Time Gangsters
Set Up McCain’s Family Fortune
Bronfman family behind the organized crime empire in
Arizona that spawned the political career of John McCain
By Michael Collins
Piper
In 1976 a crusading Phoenix reporter, Don Bolles, was murdered by a car-bomb
after writing a series of stories exposing the organized crime connections of
well-known figures in Arizona, including one Jim Hensley.
Five years later “Honest John” McCain arrived in Arizona as the new husband
of Hensley’s daughter, Cindy. “From the moment McCain landed in Phoenix,”
according to Charles Lewis of the Center for Public Integrity, “the Hensleys
were key sponsors of his political career.”
The fact is, the people ultimately behind the Hensley fortune are even more
interesting and controversial
While it is well-known McCain’s father-in-law is owner of the biggest
Anheuser-Busch beer distributor in Arizona—one of the largest beer distributors
in the nation—the media has had nothing to say about the origins of the Hensley
fortune that financed McCain’s rise to power.
The Hensley fortune, in fact, is a regional offshoot of the big time
bootlegging and rackets empire of the Bronfman dynasty of Canada, founded by Sam
Bronfman, an early partner of Meyer Lansky, longtime “chairman of the board” of
the international crime syndicate. (The Bronfmans cover all bases. Sam’s son,
Edgar, today—at least publicly—supports George W. Bush.)
McCain’s father-in-law got his start as a top henchman of one Kemper Marley
who, for some forty years until his death in 1990 at age 84, was the undisputed
behind-the-scenes political boss of Arizona. But Marley was much more: he was
also the protege of Lansky’s longtime lieutenant, Phoenix gambler Gus Greenbaum.
In 1941 Greenbaum had set up the Transamerica Publishing and News Service,
which operated a national wire service for bookmakers. In 1946 Green baum turned
over the day-to-day operations to Marley while Greenbaum focused on building up
Lansky-run casinos in Las Vegas, commuting there from his home in Phoe nix.
Greenbaum, in fact, was so integral to the Lansky empire that he was the one who
took command of Lansky’s Las Vegas interests in 1947 after Lansky ordered the
execution of his own longtime friend, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, for skimming
profits from the new Flamingo Casino.
Greenbaum and his wife were murdered in a mob “hit” in 1948, their throats
cut. The murder set off a series of gangland wars in Phoenix, but Marley
survived and prospered
During this time Marley was building up a liquor distribution monopoly in
Arizona. The truth is that it was the Bronfman family that set Marley up in
business. However, in 1948, some 52 of Marley’s employees (including Jim
Hensley) went to jail on federal liquor violations—but not Marley.
The story in Arizona is that Hensley took the fall for Marley. Upon Hensley’s
release from prison, Marley paid Hensley back by setting him up in the beer
business. That company today, said to be worth $200 million, financed McCain’s
career. And without Marley’s political support McCain could have never even
gotten elected dogcatcher.
But there’s more. McCain’s father-in-law had also dabbled in the dog racing
business and he expanded his family fortune further by selling his dog racing
track to an individual connected to the the Buffalo-based Jacobs family.
The Jacobs were the leading distributors for Bronfman liquor into the United
States during Prohibition into the hands of local gangs that were part of the
Lansky syndicate. Expanding over the years, the family’s enterprises were once
described as being “probably the biggest quasi-legitimate cover for organized
crime’s money-laundering in the United States.”
While John McCain himself can not be held personally responsible for the sins
of his father-in-law, the fact is that this reformer” owes his political and
financial fortunes to the good graces of the biggest names in
organized crime.

PULLING STRINGS FOR SENATOR McCAIN
Posted Saturday, February 02 @ 23:10:47 EST |
Forwarded by Prof. Paul Eidelberg
"...What one can draw from all this is that the American public is very
much manipulated by the media perceptions of who is declared the "front
runner," who is "losing steam" or who is "not going to win." …"
Joel
Skousen's World Affairs Brief
February 2, 2008
The US political circus is an amazing, if not agonizing, show to watch .
First, we saw Rudy Giuliani, the establishment's pre-election favorite
(only because the media said so) go from front runner status to a
disastrous showing in the primaries--garnering less votes than Rep . Ron
Paul, who was systematically denied any meaningful media coverage at all
. It appears the public is either fickle or the media polls were just
plain lying--perhaps both . Then we saw John McCain with almost no
support suddenly rise to front runner status after a barrage of big name
newspaper and personality endorsements so unanimous that there had to
have existed some guiding hand . The establishment boost for McCain is
still ongoing in a big way and is intended to gain McCain a majority of
delegates before the convention convenes--which would eliminate a
brokered convention where deals and concession have to be made in order
to gain that majority . In an up or down vote between McCain or Romney,
without Huckabee to draw away votes from Romney, McCain would lose .
That's what the king makers are trying to avoid by manipulating the
public during the primaries . It's time to let America know more about
the real McCain . Believe me, he is no hero .
First, a suspicious view from the Left . British journalist Johann
Hari of The Independent in Britain tells Americans "Don't be fooled
by the myth of John McCain . "
"A lazy, hazy myth has arisen out of the mists of New Hampshire and
South Carolina . Across the pan-Atlantic press, the grizzled
71-year-old Vietnam vet, John McCain, is being billed as the
Republican liberals can live with . He is 'a bipartisan
progressive,' 'a principled hard liberal,' 'a decent man' --in the
words of liberal newspapers . His fragile new frontrunner status as
we go into Super Tuesday is being seen as something to cautiously
welcome, a kick to the rotten Republican establishment… .
"McCain … was sent to one of the most elite boarding schools in
America , then to a naval academy where he ranked 894th of 899
students in ability . He used nepotism to get ahead: When he was
rejected by the National War College , he used his father's contacts
with the Secretary of the Navy to make them reconsider…
"Right up to his twenties, he remained a strikingly violent man,
'ready to fight at the drop of a hat,' according to his biographer
Robert Timberg . This rage seems to be at the core of his
personality: describing his own childhood, McCain has written: 'At
the smallest provocation I would go off into a mad frenzy, and then
suddenly crash to the floor unconscious . When I got angry I held my
breath until I blacked out . ' But he claims he was transformed by
his experiences in Vietnam . . . His plane was shot down on a
bombing raid over Hanoi , and he was captured and tortured for five
years [Not all true . He was tortured at first, and then he
collaborated with his captors until released] . …
One blogger named "Dan" offered up this list on the internet about
John McCain's abysmal record as a "conservative:"
IMMIGRATION: he wrote the bill granting amnesty to illegal
immigrants (co-sponsored by Ted Kennedy)
SOCIAL SECURITY: he voted to give your social security money to
illegal immigrants
TAXES: he voted against the Bush tax cuts multiple times (but still
campaigns as a lifelong tax-cutter)
FIRST AMENDMENT: he wrote the McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill
that was declared to be an unconstitutional infringement of the 1st
Amendment (co-sponsored by ultra-liberal Democrat Russ Feingold)
SECOND AMENDMENT: he was called the 'worst 2nd amendment candidate'
by the president of the NRA
ENERGY TAX: wrote a bill (co-sponsored by his buddy Sen . Joe
Lieberman) imposing a massive tax on energy which, according to the
Department of Energy, would drastically raise the price of gasoline
.
GLOBAL WARMING: supports radical global warming legislation
JUDGES: he joined with Democrats (Gang of 14) to block the Senate
Republican's attempt to confirm conservative, strict constructionist
judges .
GAY MARRIAGE: he joined liberals to fight against a federal marriage
amendment
CHRISTIANS: In 2000, he famously described Christian leaders as
'agents of intolerance'
ABORTION: he filed an amicus brief against pro-life advocates in
Wisconsin
BI-PARTISANSHIP: he met with leading Democrats in 2004 to discuss
the possibility of being John Kerry's VP .
ETHICS: ringleader of the infamous Keating 5 ethical scandal which
cost US tax payers $160 billion
PERSONAL: McCain cheated on his first wife after she had a severe
accident . He then divorced her and married his multi-millionaire
mistress, whose daddy bought McCain a spot in the Congress .
With all of this, establishmen king-makers have their hands full
trying to turn sow's ear into a silk purse . As John M . Broder
writes, "Mr . McCain, who has delighted in sticking his thumb in the
eye of mainstream Republicans throughout his political career, is
now accumulating a base of support among party regulars who see him
as the strongest general election candidate in the remaining
Republican field . "
This is not true at all . McCain's support comes almost exclusively
from the same insiders who were promoting Giuliani . They all
switched to McCain when someone gave them the signal that Giuliani
wasn't going to make it (too many corruption scandals revealed and
more on the way), and they needed to make sure Romney didn't accrue
the remaining Republican support .
I don't pretend to know who's making these calls that direct these
perfectly timed endorsements, but I know something is going on
behind the scenes that is "too good to be true" to be natural .
Consider:
All six major newspapers that gave any endorsement just prior to the
Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary (and they did so within a day
of each other) came out for McCain who was polling in last place .
None for Giuliani, the front runner? None! There were no other
endorsements for any other Republicans . There was even an
anti-endorsement of Romney . That's unheard of .
Look at the crucial Florida primary . As John
Nichols writes, " Florida gave McCain a clear if hardly overwhelming
victory over his chief rival for the GOP nod, former Massachusetts
Governor Mitt Romney . With most of the votes counted, McCain had 36
percent of the vote . Romney had 31 percent . …
Bush conservatives don't really run the party . They are merely the
ignorant cheerleaders . The Powers That Be have their own people at
the top positions, and these people are anything but moral, and
anything but religious . These are the ones driving the McCain surge
back to the top . They are working the endorsement angle in
strategic block moves .
They tapped Pro-homosexual Republican governor Charlie Crist to come
out and endorsed McCain--McCain was ignorant of the fact, which was
telling--someone else was whispering in Crist's ear . The Crist
endorsement came a mere 24 hours after Senator Mel Martinez (a
Latino and the recent Chair of the Republican National Committee)
came out for McCain, which helped sway thousands of Cuban-American
votes in So . Florida toward McCain . If anyone's endorsement
represents the Republican establishment it is Martinez 's… .
In Florida , former Gov . Mike Huckabee was clearly playing the role
of McCain cheerleader and spoiler for Romney . Every chance Huckabee
got, he plied McCain with compliments and bashed Romney . Huckabee
was singlehandedly responsible for denying Romney wins in key
northern counties where Huckabee split off the evangelical Christian
vote . What is even more telling is that Huckabee has said he is
going to stay in the race until the end, despite only getting 13% of
the Florida vote . I suspect the establishment is playing him along
for a possible Vice President spot, on condition that he stay in the
race to draw votes away from Romney . Huckabee is thinking that he
can act as some kind of power broker at the convention if he stays,
but that's wishful thinking . The establishment isn't going to let
any evangelical Christian gain high office, unless they also happen
to be a member of Skull and Bones, like George Bush .
Giuliani is finished, having only garnered 14% of the Florida vote .
Still, he flew out to California just to make a big media splash by
endorsing McCain . Topping off the list of endorsements before the
big California primary on Tuesday was that of Gov . Arnold
Schwarzenegger--the Terminator (of Romney) . Ever since
Schwarzenegger's meeting with Lord Rothschild and the Bilderbergers
in 2005, he's been acting more the globalist than the "conservative"
governor of California he was elected to be .
No matter how much Romney bends over backwards to promote
establishment political doctrine, the establishment doesn't want him
. It's not only because he is a Mormon--it's the fact that he came
into this race totally uninvited, with enough money to remain
independent--that's what they don't like . This a closed political
club that controls both major parties, and the stakes for them are
too high to take a chance on trying to control an outsider as
President . They had enough problems controlling Reagan… .
What one can draw from all this is that the American public is very much
manipulated by the media perceptions of who is declared the "front
runner," who is "losing steam" or who is "not going to win . " … |

Why McCain Can Tap into the Jewish Vote
By
Suzanne Fields
John McCain is a New York Giant, not a New England Patriot. He has never come
close to a perfect season, but like Eli Manning, he believes he can do it even
if nobody else does. Super Tuesday was not quite the Super Bowl -- that comes in
November. But the senator has the Big Mo, and that counts for a lot in politics
as well as football. Now we'll see if he can show the Manning touch, moving down
the field.
Other analogies thrive. Joe Lieberman, who was at John McCain's side Tuesday
night, thinks his colleague might be Judah Macabee, a reference to the warrior
whose victory over the Greeks is commemorated in the celebration of Hanukkah.
"He's got that spirit," Sen. Lieberman told the Forward, the Jewish daily
newspaper in New York. The Connecticut senator is credited with helping not only
with the Jewish turnout for McCain in Florida, but for helping with the Cubans,
who aren't Jewish, too.
Sen. McCain, lacking wide and deep support from the conservative true
believers, will have to make up for it with his tested appeal to independents
and Hispanics, and hope the true believers will overcome whatever impulse they
have to sulk. There's one other important group he might tap into as well. Ever
since FDR created the New Deal, which his critics called the "Jew Deal" because
so many of his brain trusters were Jews, the Jewish vote has mostly been taken
for granted by Democrats. Ronald Reagan persuaded more Jews than usual to vote
Republican, but when Al Gore took Joe Lieberman as his running mate Jewish
voters returned to the Democrats in droves. Now that may change.
The two senators go back a long way, working on legislative issues together,
sharing the worldview that Sen. Lieberman describes as "a feeling that America
has a unique role in the world, of taking the Declaration of Independence
seriously.[as] a universal declaration of human rights." That means "our foreign
policy is always better when it's based on democratic values." The two men
became even closer when the United States intervened in Bosnia and more recently
in support of the surge in Iraq. Sen. Lieberman endorsed his friend before he
was a front-runner, drawn by the McCain emphasis on foreign policy.
What is less well known as an element in the affinity the two senators share
is an appreciation of evangelical Christians, for their evangelical support for
Israel and for trying to hold a line of decency against vulgarity and the
glorification of violence in the popular culture. Prying older Jews away from
their loyalty to the Democrats -- Jews, like Southerners of an earlier time, are
the most the loyal of yellow dog Democrats -- but younger Jews hold no such
blind loyalty. FDR, like Charlemagne and Richard the Lionheart is ancient
history. "Mac the Maverick" is 21st century.
Many Jewish voters, for all their loyalty to the party of the New Deal,
appreciate Sen. McCain's fervent support for the surge in Iraq, understanding
that it's all of a piece with a clear-eyed view of what's at stake in the Middle
East. They can appreciate the McCain appraisal of Vladimir Putin, contributor of
Iran's nuclear capability: "I looked into his eyes and I saw three letters -- a
K, a G and a B." Transferring allegiance from Rudy Giuliani, with his national
security bona fides, to John McCain might not be difficult.
Most Jews are registered Democrats, of course, and Hillary and Obama are
courting them aggressively. Hillary won most of them in Florida, Nevada, New
Jersey and California, but according to exit polls Barack Obama won them in
Connecticut and Massachusetts. The memory of Hillary's kiss for Yasser Arafat's
wife Suha in 1999, after she accused Israel of poisoning Palestinian women and
children, is still fresh in the memory of many Jews.
When doubts were raised last week about the strength of Sen. Obama's resolve
in the Middle East, he called several Jewish reporters to reiterate his
"pro-Israel positions," his defense of Israeli security and repeated his
insistence that Hamas must recognize Israel's right to exist before Washington
will talk to them. He agrees that Iran with nuclear weapons is unacceptable and
he has been a voice against anti-Semitism in the black community, but his pastor
and mentor is a fan of Louis Farrakhan, who called Judaism either "a dirty
religion" or "a gutter religion," depending on the reading of the audiotape.
But the McCain record on fighting terrorism, and his bold assertion that the
fight against radical Muslims is the transforming struggle for the new century,
offers Jews an alternative to both Obama and Hillary. Like everything else in
this presidential campaign, old loyalties are scrambled like a plate of
breakfast eggs.
