As The Federalist has reported previously, science is finally catching on that prayer works! A study at North Carolina's Duke University Medical Center found that patients with heart problems who received alternative therapy after angioplasty were 25 to 30 percent less likely to suffer complications, while those who were subjects of "intercessory prayer" on their behalf had the greatest successful recovery rate. The study of 150 patients, conducted between April 1997 and April 1998, involved random assignment of patients to study groups, and neither the patients nor the physician researchers were aware of the group assignments. Prayer had the greatest health benefits, surpassing such alternatives added to standard heart care as guided imagery, stress relaxation, and healing touch therapies. - The Federalists

The decision to ban Christian school prayer was made some 26 years ago on June 25, 1962 in Engel v. Vitale. Engel, a Jewish resident of New York, objected to the prayer composed by the New York State Board of Regents and recommended for adoption by the public school districts of New York.

BURBANK -- The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday refused to review Burbank's appeal of two lower courts' decisions banning the City Council from opening meetings with sectarian prayers.

The high court refusal means all California cities and counties will be bound by the same prohibition, attorneys said.

"We won at every level possible, and it's incredible," said Roger Jon Diamond, representing Burbank opponents in the suit. "The challenge we anticipate now is to see how other cities will change."

The lawsuit, triggered by a 1999 prayer at a Burbank council meeting in which a Mormon minister invoked the name of Jesus Christ, was brought by Irv Rubin, the late chairman of the Jewish Defense League, and Roberto Alejandro Gandara, a supporter of strict church-state separation.

"This is one of Irv's legacies, a testament to my husband's belief in the Constitution," said his widow, Shelley Rubin. "I will be as vigilant as my husband was to make sure that every city in the state that is sponsoring sectarian prayers is wrong.

"We want to make sure everyone feels welcome to practice the religion they want, but we want them to know in city hall chambers, we are all Americans," she said.

Burbank officials said they were disappointed with the decision.

"We would have liked to have had this looked at," said Burbank's chief assistant attorney, Juli Scott. "You hate to be the city that makes the law that messes it up for everyone else."

Since 1953, Burbank's City Council has begun meetings with an invocation by a member of a nondenominational ministerial association.

Attorney Douglas Collodel, who filed a friend-of-the-court brief on behalf of the International Municipal Lawyers Association and the other cities defending sectarian prayer, agreed the case will force changes statewide.

"It affects all legislative bodies in California, from the smallest city to the largest," Douglas said. "To avoid being sued, many cities may decide to abolish prayer altogether."

New England Primer used in American public schools for centuries

As far as the right to pray in school, we definitely have strict guidelines that separate state and religion (read your history book, fella). If you want to pray and act as if Christianity is the ONLY religion on this planet, PLEASE go to your Christian schools and shout PTL to your heart's content. I have no problem with that. Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, and atheists have the same liberty to do this in THEIR own schools.

But, if you try to IMPOSE your will and religious idealogies on my children, who are going to public school to receive a secular reducation (I responsibly take care of their religios upbringing personally, according to my own beliefs), I will FIGHT you and your cronies with every fiber of my body.  R. Of Americans polled by the Gallup Organization:

	90% pray regularly.
	86% believe in God.
	85% are Christians.
	83% favor prayers at graduation ceremonies
	81% want creation to be taught in public schools
	74% want the Ten Commandments to be displayed
	70% want spoken Christian prayers in public schools

Only 16% want to prevent high school teachers from teaching creation, only 28% don't want children to have the right to spoken daily prayer in their classrooms, only 24% don't want the Ten Commandments to be displayed, only 17% don't want students to say prayers at graduation ceremonies, only 15% are non-Christians, only 9% believe that only evolution explains the beginning of life, only 5% don't believe in God or a higher spirit, and only 31% believe the Boy Scouts should be forced to admit sodomites.

From the day the Bill of Rights was ratified on December 15, 1791, until the day the US Supreme Court banned school prayer in 1963, a period of 172 years (almost 2 centuries) hundreds of millions of US citizens believed that "free exercise of religion" meant the right of their children to say a spoken prayer in their public schools.  To this day, almost three out of four Americans still want children to have spoken school prayer in public schools, but they are denied this benefit because of Jews like Dr. Weiss who unilaterally converted two centuries of "free exercise *of* religion" into "free exercise *from* religion" by saying things like the above.

This makes the five million Jews in the US, who are less than two percent of the population, a direct threat to the moral integrity of our constitutional republic and to each of the 264 million Christians who live here.  This is a battle cry to a religious war which Christians cannot afford to lose.  Not only is this a threat to our children's free exercise of religion, but it undermines our entire education process, our Constitution, and, according to the Gallup Poll, it violates the will of more than two thirds of we the people, all the way from Tennessee to California: 

	SAT Scores decreased 98 points since spoken school prayer in US public schools was banned.
	Countries with spoken school prayer score more than 100 TIMSS points higher than US 12th graders.
	Religious schools in some states score 31 NAEP points higher than private schools in those states.
	Public schools cost three to four times as much per student as religious schools.
	University School in Cincinnati scores higher than every one of California's 731 public schools which prohibit spoken school prayer.
	Four out of five Americans want spoken school prayer.
	The US murder rate almost tripled since spoken school prayer was banned.

All of the countries which score significantly higher than the US in timss geometry allow their students to pray in school, which is where students spend up to one third of their week day. SAT scores decreased 98 points since school prayer in public schools was banned in 1961 in the US, and have shown no signs of recovery. Catholic and other religious schools which allow school prayer produce students with some of the highest SAT scores in the country. A much larger percentage of Catholic school graduates go to college than those from public schools. The cost of education per year per student in Catholic schools is $2,178, compared to $6,631 in public schools--a difference of three times (3x).

The manner in which bureaucracies are allowed to estimate costs results in underestimates of public school costs.  For example, when all other public education funding sources are included, the actual cost per student in Los Angeles is $9,082, even though the official cost per student is only $6,025.   Thus, the total cost of educating a student in public schools is as much as four times higher than that of Catholic schools which do a better job of educating students in every way--academically, morally, spiritually, ethically, and physically. The median SAT score of Los Angeles is 849, compared to a California statewide average of 902, so Californians aren't getting their money's worth in LA even before considering that the NAEP scores of California's non-public schools are 21 points higher than public schools. The non-public schools (which includes Catholic schools, other religious schools, and non-religious private schools) of every state score considerably higher than their public schools [naepmath.pdf--an 8mb file]. The average NAEP scores of  Texan non-public 12th graders is 31 points higher than Texan public schoolers.  This is the equivalent of 118 SAT Math points.   The difference between public and religious schools is even bigger.  It may be greater than the difference in math scores between education and engineering majors.   In other words, public schools in some states are producing the teachers while religious ones are producing the engineers.

Denying American students an education equivalent to that of Catholic schools which are a proven success, at the same time that taxpayers are charged an extra $6,904 per student just to maintain secular public schools, should be a criminal offense.  Students are shortchanged in life by receiving an education equivalent to that of teachers when they could have had one equivalent to engineers, and they are penalized an extra $6,904 per student for the privilege when they become taxpayers.

University School in Cleveland, Ohio allows school prayer and produces students with higher average SAT scores than every one of California's 731 public high schools:

	SAT Verbal = 620
	SAT Math = 630

If no other factors are involved, these undisputed facts suggest that reestablishing spoken school prayer in US public schools has the potential to:

1. Increase education quality by the equivalent of 98 SAT points.
2. Cut public elementary and secondary education costs by three quarters, from 4.1% of GDP to 1%.

Such a reduction in education costs would save the nation $255 billion per year. Considering that the nation now has a negative rate of personal savings, an additional $255 billion retained in taxpayers' bank accounts would have a profound effect on the long term viability of the nation.
