When counted by persons, there were 7,829 men and 1,464 women whose "traffic"
accidents were considered "alcohol related", which is 12% and 4.3%,
respectively, of all the persons involved in the 37,043 fatal crashes in 1999.
When counted by the number of vehicles involed, there were 6,725 men and 1,287
women, or 15% and 5.6%. When counted by number of crashes, there were 7,191 men and
1,397 women, or 21.5% and 7.1% of all those involved in fatal crashes
When the 565 men who had been drinking and died while operating cycles, ATVs,
snowmobiles, farm equipment, etc., are subtracted, the percent of
"alcohol-involved" men drops to 11.2%, and when the 579 men who were killed as
pedestrians while they had been drinking, the percent drops to 10.4%.
