What is the True Goal of Education? Im NOT happy with the path public education is leading us down. A friend asked, "What is the true goal of education?" To me a Goal is: "A long-term broad objective, that we INTEND to achieve." This is a very different scope from a short-term objective, like "What are we going to accomplish today?" This was my reply, "To preserve the Intelligence, Creativity and Initiative of the individual while increasing the social, moral and cultural level of society." I invite each community member and school to compare this statement to their Goal. Lets take Intelligence; the ability to distinguish differences, similarities and identities or the ability to perceive, pose and resolve problems. Since 1950 it has been scientifically proven that an individuals intelligence can be significantly improved in a short time. Intelligence is not genetic. That idea has been known to be false since 1950. To preserve or improve intelligence is the easiest, least expensive and rewarding path for education to take. To reduce intelligence takes lots of time, tons of work. None of it is worthwhile! Has anyone noticed the result? You should have, because the testing service for the SATs says "50 percent of American math students drop out each year." They say only 5 percent of graduates are actively in math at 12th grade level. Heres one well proven idea to preserve Intelligence: Instead of using "context clues" where words are incompletely defined. Define each word in the curriculum well using a good dictionary, before it is seen in print or heard. Use each definition in sentences. Then the student can instantly select a correct, complete definition from his mind using the context when reading or listening. The student will not become confused, unable to learn and then drop out. Leon L. Hulett Professional Engineer Kingsley |
